“Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a method for generating electricity which uses the temperature difference that exists between deep and shallow waters to run a heat engine. As with any heat engine, the greatest efficiency and power is produced with the largest temperature difference.” – wikipedia.org
It looks like the US Navy is considering doing this on Guam (link1, link2). That would be hella cool. Guam sits right at the edge of the Marianas Trench (the deepest part of the ocean) so i’m sure they would be able to find a good location to exploit the disparity in temperature. In fact, a quick google shows that the Navy has been considering this for a while (1975 Study on suitability of Guam for OTEC).

Here is an excellent presentation by Lawrence Lessig, founder of the Creative Commons, from fora.tv (here is a direct link).
CHANGE CONGRESS is a national movement to end corruption in America’s congress. spread the word and get involved.

the democratic caucus on guam was a tight race and basically resulted in a split decision. the pledged delegates will be divided two per candidate, with the five super- delegates deciding later (they will probably be 3 for clinton and 2 for obama). so even though the headlines are saying that obama won Guam, in actuality Clinton may come out with the most delegates because of the unpledged super-delegates.
That’s not the crazy thing though. in the video on cnn ( here ) they show some supposed footage of the island. You see a grass hut and kids wearing nothing but a loin clothe. CNN is so freaking bogus because that footage is not from Guam and is misportrays the island. The footage is more likely from Chuuk or maybe even Pohnpei. I think it’s sad how CNN will misrepresent the truth just to make an interesting story.

Today is Guam’s chance to cast their vote in the Democratic Caucus. Being the outspoken person I am, I have jumped into the grassroots movement by enlisting other people to vote for him. This isn’t too difficult since he spent some time growing up in hawaii (islanders tend to stick together).
What i find remarkable about all this is how easy Obama’s campaign makes it for his supporters to get involved. He has published his position on some of the local issues, an open letter and his campaign is even calling long distance to get people out to vote.

Did you read about the recent xss attack on Obama’s blog? This happened just before the Pennsylvania Primaries, where Clinton’s nomination hung in the balance.
Apparently Twitter has also been experiencing outages over the last few days. The timing couldn’t have been worse for the Obama campaign. The outage hitting the Obama demographic squarely when they certainly could have used the services.
Normally i’m not into conspiracies but the Clinton camp has pulled off at least one major cyber-victory against the Obama campaign (the XSS) and they have the political motivation and probably the resources to have done this. If they were techno-savvy enough to pull off a twitter heist, then this would be the most notable act of hactivism in recent history. cool to think about.

It’s very rare that you find one of those open source applications that just makes you go wow, that’s cool. Or at least it’s very rare for me. Anyways, here is a very cool one for you trekkies out there.
from the sourceforge project page:
Star Trek 24/7: LCARS (Starfleet) GUI, full-screen alarm clock & calendar, games, utilities, sims, maps, graphical LCARS library, file manager, viewers, players, animation. Requires a HighColor/TrueColor DOS-based laptop w/ std. graphics & sound cards.
it basically turns an old laptop into a starfleet terminal. VERY COOL!

When he return to Ireland
Some came to greet him
Tall youths nearing manhood
Came to meet him.
They knelt to kiss his ring,
Receive his blessing;
He knew them not,
Forgetfulness confessing.
“We were the childeren.
Many years ago
When you were slave to Miliuc
You taught us what we know.”
“But why the shamrock
On your tunics gay?”
“You used it as a symbol,
Showing us the way
of the true Cross
And the Trinity.”
- Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
